Grand Knights Message

Brother Knights,

We continue the work of our Parish, Council, and Church. How can we recognize and utilize every Brothers talent? Be active and concerned. Peace to All Brothers in Christ.

Fraternal ReportKindly remember in your prayers those Brother Knights and their family members who are ill and/or recuperating at home or in the hospital. Also, please continue to remember and pray for the souls of the deceased. Remember that one of the most important ways Knights support each other is through prayer, especially at times of illness or death. Anyone that knows of a member of this council or a council member’s family who is sick or in need of assistance should contact Grand Marty Hopper at 610-837-6370

November 14th, 2011 Council Meeting - The following items of business were discussed:

Chaplain Report:

None

Treasurer Report:

BK James Wettstein gave the Treasurers Report.

In addition, BK Wettstein reported that 75 of the 100 prepaid COAL ticket books have been.

Financial Secretary Report:

BK Paul Bunting is working on updating the Council directory and that he has sent our e-mails looking for confirmation of contact information and asking what contact information can be shared on an individual basis.

Trustees Report:

None

Chancellor Report:

PGK Ken Boyce asked that we pray for more vocations.

Old Business:

BK Rick Gower thanked all of the volunteers that came out to help with cooking, setting up, serving, and cleaning up after the spaghetti dinner. Great Job to all!

Further, BK Gower reported statistics for the dinner as follows:

1.      24 Tickets were pre-sold. The day of the dinner sales were 75 adults and 13 youths.

2.      Total profit was $xxx

3.      50/50 tickets and COAL tickets were sold

PGK Ken Boyce reports that the annual Iron Pigs outing is set for Friday 6/8/12, 100 tickets have been reserved. Tickets will be $10 each and will include a $2 coupon on refreshments.

PGK Boyce also reminded us that the Christmas Party is scheduled for Saturday 12/17. He also reports the following related items.

1.      He needs nominations for Knight of the Year and Family of the Year.

2.      He needs help.

3.      He will be out of town 12/10 through 12/17.

PGK Boyce reported that Marcus Monogram (the outfit we get our monogrammed shirts from) that the 4th Degree go is available for any of the Sir Knights interested.

PGK Boyce also asked if anyone is interested in hats to let him know and he will order.

New Business:

BK Tony Sulpizio brought up the subject of the cost of the Bus to Washington, D.C. for the Right to Life march. PGK Ken Boyce made a motion that Council subsidize cost of the bus the same way as last year, that being that Council would pay the balance due that the cost of tickets may not cover. The motion was seconded and passed by unanimous vote.

BK Carl Niedzwicki floated the idea of holding a sock hop as a spring fundraiser. Right now he is looking for a show of interest/support.

BK Jim Meyer asked Council to consider looking into making the door to the Church automatic. It was agreed to look into it as either a Council or as a Boy Scout Eagle Service Project.

 Committee Reports:

Community – BK Tony Sulpizio reported that the Senate Judiciary Committee passed Sen. Diane Feinstein’s (D-CA) bill S.598 “Respect for Marriage Act” which in reality is the polar opposite of the “Defense of Marriage Act.” S.598 if enacted will put your tax dollars to pay the federal benefits and subsidies of same sex couples, irrespective of where they live, as long as they were “married” in a state that allows such unions. We must urge our Senators to vote NO on S.598.

BK Sulpizio also to the “Pennsylvania for Marriage” website where you can go to send messages to our state representatives that we want an amendment to the PA Constitution defining marriage as the union between one man and one woman.

BK Sulpizio also asked for a show of hands for interest in taking CPR for the cost of materials from Tom Rothrock. Eight hands were raised and with that interest, Tony will shoot for Tuesday, 12/13 in the Burkhart building as plan A.

Council Director – None

Family Director - BK Robert Quartararo will be sending out an e-mail looking for preferences to a Family movie or Family Game night to be held sometime after the holidays.

Pro-Life – BK Tony Sulpizio that President Obama is receiving backlash from 27 Senators over his denial of a grant to the Catholic Bishops because the Bishops refused to refer for abortions. The grant was originally awarded to the Catholic Bishops for a program to help the victims of sex trafficking but the grant was not extended due to the Catholic program’s refusal to refer victims for abortions. At the heart of this is an apparent unwritten policy at Department of Health and Human Resources (led by pro-abortion Secretary Kathleen Sebelius) of grants being subject to an ABC policy (Anyone But Catholics).

Good of the Order:

BK Mike Kolesar’s wife, Irene spoke to us about Catholic Charities in the Diocese of Allentown. Irene serves on the Catholic Charities Public Relations Committee and her presentation really opened our eyes to what good work is done by Catholic Charities. One takeaway from Irene’s presentation that the writer wasn’t aware of is that Catholic charities is not just for helping Catholics they are for all in need.

Catholic Charities of Allentown is a fully accredited charity and has their COA. Annually they serve on the order of 29,000 people in need. In 2011, 65% of their funding was through Government. For 2012, Catholic Charities is expecting to lose a big piece of that 65%.

The following programs were expanded on: (next page)

1.      Community Services where the goal is to help families and individuals establish and sustain independence.  Means of support can be housing funds (when available) and food pantries.

2.      Parish Outreach develops and supports lay leaders and parish volunteers.

3.      Counseling and Behavioral Health offers licensed professional staff to assist with couples and family relationships along with anxiety depression and parent/child relations issues. Most insurances are accepted for these services.

4.      Pregnancy and Support Services provide pregnancy and parenting counseling along with adoption planning.

5.      Children’s Services provides temporary homes for children along with foster home and adoption programs.

6.      Adoption Services create permanent families brought through infant, international, special needs, and sibling group adoptions.

7.      Refugee and Immigration Services assist with the legalization of status and reunification of families.

8.      Services for Older Adults provide benefit assessments via case managers.

9.      Adult Day Care in Orwigsburg provides socialization, supportive services and nutritious meals for older adults.

Thanks to Irene for an edifying presentation. Catholic Charities of Allentown is clearly worthy of our support.

Rose and Rosary:  No report.
